Hello my lovely people!!!
Have you ever heard some fancy art student or professor use the word "hue" when trying to explain the way something looks? I don't know about you, but before I knew what the word meant I would be completely lost as they rambled on with their fancy jargon. Now that I am a more experienced artists, I would like to help you understand what that word means.
If you look up the word "hue" at Dictionary.com this is what you will see:
1. a gradation or variety of a color; tint: pale
2. the property of light by which the color of an object is classified as red, blue, green, or
yellow in reference to the spectrum.
3. color: all the hues of the rainbow.
4. form or appearance.
Okay, that's all fine and dandy, but really people? Can't they just make it easy on us?
So, I guess that is what I am here for!
another word for color
Plain and simple. When you hear some crazy person trying to sound like they know EVERYTHING about the world by using the word "hue" in their sentence they are really talking about color.
-What hue do you want to paint your walls?
-The hue of that pillow matches perfectly with the rest of my décor!
-I need a different hue to pull together this piece.
-What color do you want to paint your walls?
-The color of that pillow matches perfectly with the rest of my décor!
-I need a different color to pull together this piece.
HUE = COLOR
Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, and Blue are all considered hues! When you mix those colors together and you get some other crazy colors they will still be considered hues. Pretty easy right?
There you have it folks! Now, seeing as you are striving to do SOMETHING in the art field, I definitely recommend you try adding this word to your vocabulary. You always want to look like you know what you are talking about, but don't make your clients feel small for not knowing what you are saying. Take the time to explain if they seem confused. Just try not to be the know-it-all we talked about in the beginning of this blog.
Question of the day:
What is your favorite hue and why?
That's it for today, my lovely people. Stay creative! <3
